Hot cross buns, ham, and days at the beach, and lots and lots of chocolate are what mostly come to mind when you think of Easter in Southeast Queensland. Don’t forget the hours stuck in traffic as you migrate from the city to the coast and the overpriced beach accommodation that is packed with every other traveller. If you are looking to escape the masses, stay out of traffic, and still have a holiday over the Easter long weekend, look no further than the beautiful Brisbane.
Brisbane during Easter has many of the benefits of its coastal neighbours without the hustle, crowds, and expense. Skip the Byron Bay Bluesfest and instead hit up the Brisbane Bluesfest, which features some of what the larger festival has to offer. The Bluewater Festival and Redcliffe Sails Festival also take place over the Easter long weekend, featuring lots of free entertainment, including market style street food, live music, and great activities for the kids.
For those looking for a bit of arts and culture during their holiday, GOMA has new world class exhibitions on at the moment, some of which are free, making it the perfect destination for gallery viewing. Queensland Performing Arts Trust (QPAC) is also playing host to the musical My Fair Lady, a timeless tale perfect for the entire family.
Head to South Bank, the city’s premier lifestyle and cultural precinct, with lush parklands, well-appointed cafes, and a man made beach. Pack a picnic lunch or grab some chocolate from some of the many boutiques in the area.
Finally, for those wild about sports, catch a Brisbane Broncos (NRL) game versus the Gold Coast Titans in the Southeast Queensland Darby at 7:50pm at Suncorp Stadium on Friday April 14th. The Brisbane Lions (AFL) also take to the pitch versus the Richmond Tigers at 4:40pm at the Gabba on Easter Sunday.
