In the lead up to what will be one of the biggest events the Gold Coast has hosted, here are 10 fun facts about the Commonwealth games.

1.The Commonwealth Games has been held 20 times in history

2.The first Commonwealth Games was in 1930 hosted in Ontario, Canada

3.Australia has the most medals over time (2218 medals) followed by England (2008 medals) and Canada (1473 medals)

4.Only a few teams have competed in every single Games. They are Australia, New Zealand, England, Canada, Scotland and Wales.

5.The Queens Baton Relay will have travelled 230,000 kilometres to get to the Gold Coast

6.The last 5 venues for the Commonwealth Games were:

  1. 2014 – Glasgow, Scotland
  2. 2010 – Delhi, India
  3. 2006 – Melbourne, Australia
  4. 2002 – Manchester, United Kingdom
  5. 1998 – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

7.The Games must include 10 core sports including:

  1. Aquatics (swimming)

  4. Boxing (men, with an option to add women’s events)
  5. Hockey
  6. Lawn Bowls
  7. Netball (women)
  8. Rugby 7s (men, with an option to add women’s sevens)

  10. Weightlifting

8.The host nation can add up to seven more sports. The Para-sports events are incorporated on top of these sports. Mandatory Para-Sports events for the games include:

  1. Lawn Bowls
  2. Swimming
  3. Athletics
  4. Powerlifting

9.In 2018 there will be 18 events showcased. These include:

  1. Aquatics (swimming)
  2. Athletics
  3. Badminton
  4. Boxing (men, with an option to add women’s events)
  5. Hockey

  7. Netball (women)
  8. Rugby 7s (men, with an option to add women’s sevens)

  13. Basketball
  14. Beach volleyball
  15. Cycling (road, mountain bike and track)
  16. Gymnastics (rhythmic and artistic)
  17. Table tennis
  18. Para power lifting

10.No Commonwealth Games can exceed 20 events
